SoLé Mia’s Free Construction Training Program Addresses Labor Shortage in Construction

img_2900

In today’s tight labor market, construction firms are facing higher costs, longer time spent on projects, and more work for their builders. But some firms, like SoLé Mia, have setup pipeline programs in South Florida high schools to keep good recruits coming into the industry.

SoLé Mia partnered with CBT College to provide free construction training to North Miami Senior High School students, as an example of addressing the labor shortage in the construction industry. Much of their time in the program is spent doing hands-on training in not only construction, but also technology, plumbing, HVAC systems and REVIT 3D modeling.

The goal is for students to earn college credits, as well as a diploma in Building Construction Technology so they are inspired to get a head start on their careers in the industry. To read more on how CRE companies are facing the labor shortage, head to Bisnow South Florida.

Earlier this year, Oleta Partners, developer of SoLē Mia, launched a free construction training program with CBT College for North Miami Senior High School seniors. After five months of hands-on training, a total of 10 students successfully graduated from the pilot program in August with diplomas in Building Construction Technology. Due to its success, Oleta Partners is continuing the program with 15 new NMSHS seniors.

The program is part of Oleta Partners’ commitment to providing opportunities that support the local North Miami community and that promote the growth in the industry. The program will help address the shortage of skilled laborers plaguing the construction industry by fostering a new generation of qualified construction workers.

For the next six months, the students will take courses in Plumbing, Electricity & Systems, A/C Systems, Building Construction, and REVIT 3D Modeling, among others that will introduce them to the construction industry. Students will learn from experienced faculty and receive at least 50 percent hands-on training time in the school’s laboratories.

Once students have completed the program, they will have earned a total of 21 college credits and will receive a diploma in Building Construction Technology. With their training and diploma, they will be prepared to enter the workforce as building construction technicians or assistants.

Construction is rapidly picking up at SoLē Mia – a community that will rise at 15045 Biscayne Boulevard. As the largest project in North Miami’s history, SoLē Mia is set to become South Florida’s next iconic neighborhood blending the serenity of open spaces with the vibrancy of an urban center.

Construction on the site went vertical at the end of 2017 with SoLē Mia’s first two residential towers and the Warren Henry Automobile Dealership consisting of Land Rover, Jaguar and Infiniti. The site’s Costco is quickly moving along and will be a tenant of The Shops at SoLē Mia. The development will reshape the North Miami landscape and transform the area into an exciting destination for guests and residents. When completed, SoLē Mia Miami will feature 4,390 residences, approximately 500,000 square feet of lifestyle shopping, emerald green community parks, chef-driven restaurants, entertainment venues and office spaces.

With construction on the SoLē Mia site pushing forward, SoLē Mia’s Local Preference Office is offering City of North Miami residents short- and long-term job opportunities in various construction trades.

SoLē Mia Development Moves Forward with Wells Fargo Loan

sole-miaPlans are coming together at the SoLē Mia site. South Florida’s next iconic neighborhood & North Miami’s largest project ever, just got a financial boost to build the development’s two luxury rental towers.

An ambitious, long-in-the-works project to turn one of the largest remaining parcels of undeveloped land in South Florida into a planned community just took a step closer to fruition.

Wells Fargo & Company has made a $101 million HUD-insured loan to SM Multifamily LLC, the developer of two luxury, 17-story residential towers with a total of 400 units and attached parking garage.

The towers will be part of the first phase of SoLē Mia Miami, the 183-acre master-planned community in North Miami being developed by Oleta Partners LLC, a joint venture between two well-capitalized and experienced developers, Turnberry Associates and LeFrak.

“It is a pleasure to be part of this important development through our work with long-time clients, LeFrak and Turnberry Associates,” said Alan Wiener, head of Wells Fargo Multifamily Capital, in a statement. “This initial residential project will jump start an important mixed-use development, which will generate sustained long-term economic development in Miami for many years to come.”

Since the 1960s, various attempts to develop the land parcel have failed. Previous plans for the site formerly known as Biscayne Landing have included an amusement park and indoor ski resort. From 1975 to 1981, the tract was used as a municipal landfill. Oleta Partners acquired the property in 2015.
