La Moderna Restaurant Opens In Sunset Harbour

Mayor Philip Levine, Luca D'Angelo, & Scott Robbins72

Special guests had an opportunity to preview La Moderna Miami, a new bar/restaurant in Sunset Harbour, which combines modern Italian classic from la cucina (the kitchen), skillfully-crafted cocktails and Neapolitan-style pizza, served in a sophisticated and lively space, with more than a touch of Italian flare. La Moderna’s original location is in the trendy Testaccio neighborhood in Rome. The evening, which was hosted by owner Luca D’Angelo, showcased the talents of renown European bartenders Valentino Longo and Rusty Cerven. The duo wowed attendees with their drink-mixing skills while delicious crudos were served from the kitchen of Chef Manuel Lanni.

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine attended the preview and was seen mingling with Miami Beach residents and business leaders. International Lawyer Genilde Guerra was seen enjoying the tasty bites and admiring the space, a contemporary interpretation of a mechanical workshop, designed by award-winning Italian architect Roberto Liorni. It includes a meticulously crafted copper bar and extensive millwork that was fabricated in Italy. Scott Robins, the developer of Sunset Harbour Shops, was on hand beaming with pride over how his retail center has quickly become Miami Beach’s restaurant mecca.

La Moderna is located at 1874 Bay Road Miami Beach, Florida in Sunset Harbour. Follow La Moderna on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook @LaModernaMIA

FIU Celebrates City of Miami Beach’s 100th Anniversary

MBUSAs part of an expansive partnership with the city that began last year, FIU is hosting numerous events in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of Miami Beach.

Though the celebration runs all year, the major centennial events will be held March 22-26, including a performance by the FIU Symphony and Concert Choir at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on March 25.

According to John Stuart, associate dean of cultural and community engagement in the College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) and executive director of the Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS), FIU has had a significant presence on Miami Beach for years – so partnering with the city was a natural fit.

Beyond the centennial events, projects included in FIU’s partnership with the city range from sea level rise and transportation to dual enrollment and new courses at MBUS.

Located in the iconic 420 Lincoln Road building, FIU’s MBUS has worked with city leaders for months to help plan FIU’s collaboration with the centennial. In addition to MBUS, the Wolfsonian-FIU and the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU will play a part in the festivities.

Oberhausen Marketing & PR (OBR) is not only a business of Miami Beach, but is also a vested party in the future of the community. South Beach local Josh Oberhausen, President of OBR and member of the Board of CARTA, is passionate about seeing these projects through to fruition.

MCAD Creates Design & Policy Strategies to Build Healthier Communities

dsc01415The Miami Center for Architecture & Design is making Miami-Dade County a healthier place to live, work and play by working with city leaders to adopt and implement Active Design Miami, a set of policy and design strategies for creating healthier streets, open spaces and buildings. The initiative is meant to change the way public and private spaces are designed by going beyond looking at the efficiency of a space, but rather taking into account the way they affect the health of the individuals who interact with them.

Miami-Dade County faces a number of challenges that can benefit from use of Active Design strategies. With two-thirds of Miami-Dade County’s 2.6 million residents overweight or obese, Active Design Miami comes at a perfect time. Its goal is to tackle the County’s rising obesity and chronic disease rates, and high rates of depression and other mental health issues affecting our communities.

As of today, Miami-Dade County and the cities of Miami, Miami Beach, Pinecrest, Surfside, South Miami and Key Biscayne have formally adopted Active Design Miami, and several other cities are also nearing adoption. The strategies are not one-size fits all, so cities can select the most appropriate ones for their needs. MCAD is currently working with the County and the six cities to implement the strategies that address the health needs of their respective city. In addition, Active Design Miami puts on several meetings and events that encourage healthy living. MCAD will continue working with the county and municipalities to implement these strategies.

Congress South Beach’s Pre Art Basel Warm Up with Artist Krave & Photographer Tomas Loewy

The Congress South Beach kicked-off Art Basel Miami Beach Week with a soiree atop of the hotel’s oceanfront rooftop pool and bar. The hotel unveiled a new mural by renowned local artist, Daniel Fila, better known as “Krave” and showcased the bright, colorful floating canvasses of famed photographer Tomas Loewy in the hotel’s pool. Inspired by the hotel’s Art Deco décor, Daniel Fila created “Sunbather II”, a mural inspired by his signature pin-up style.  The mural will stay up provisionally and will be visible by passersby on Ocean Drive.  Loewy’s floating canvasses were influenced by the Burning Man Festival which he has documented through photographs and film since 2004. Guests enjoyed the 360-degree ocean and skyline views from the hotel’s rooftop and sipped complimentary cocktails by Deep Eddy Vodka.  Photo Credit:  Janine Cruz Morales

Star Architects Descend on Miami Beach to Design Parking Garages

49-53 Collins Avenue Robotic Parking Garage Designed by ADD Inc Miami

Miami Beach’s stylish parking garage movement began in 1996 with Arquitectonica’s “Chia Pet” garage on Collins Avenue. Then in 2010, Herzog & de Meuron designed the famous 1111 Lincoln Road Garage that’s not only for parking but also a venue for high-end events and weddings.  There’s Frank Gehry’s illuminated garage at the New World Center Concert Hall and soon Zaha Hadid’s garage in Collins Park.  The next wave of garages in Miami Beach are three automated robotic parking garages (two on Collins Ave and one on 1st St) designed by architect Jonathan Cardello of the architecture firm ADD Inc Miami.  See story, image gallery and video in the Wall Street Journal: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204542404577158993265073180.html?mod=slideshow_overlay_mod#slide/4
